Thanks for taking a minute to learn about who we are and what we do. At Sound Osteo we are dedicated to providing professional, experienced and effective osteopathy to everyone in the local Fitzroy, inner north (including Carlton, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Clifton Hill and beyond) community. We have a particular interest in working with musicians and those in creative industries, putting the focus on their health to make sure injury and pain doesn't get in the way of their passion.
Why musicians? Musicians and performing artists rely on their bodies every day to do what they love. The notion that injuries are just "part of the job" or that there is nothing that can be done because of the repetitive and stressful nature of the work is something we aim to change. By providing assessment, treatment and advice, we can help support their bodies to create a sustainable career.
What does an osteopath do?
Osteopathy is a fantastic modality to help your body feel better. No matter your age, size, shape, profession, fitness, abilities or issues, we may be able to help you in some way. Osteopaths are health practitioners that assess, diagnose and treat your body in order for you to be as pain free as possible and to better perform in your day to day life. We can assist and educate on injury recovery and management as well as further prevention.
As osteos, our skill is in taking a anatomic, functional look at how the parts of the body work together. We use this to identify the cause of the issue, and then use a range of hands-on techniques and education/advice to find the best way to treat and prevent future injuries or pain. We believe that the body is a unit, and that it must be looked at broadly in order to treat it as a complete, complex whole.
We are a complementary therapy and will happily work with your team of healthcare providers to get the best outcomes and care for you. Osteopathy is regulated by AHPRA in Australia. All osteopaths must be registered and adhere to industry standards.
What do we treat?
Osteopathic treatment may be able to help with a wide range of issues and complaints, including:
Back pain, neck pain, headaches, postural concerns, musculoskeletal issues related to breathing, upper and lower limb pain (including hands and feet), instrument positioning assessment, desk assessments, chronic pain, strength and mobility, pregnancy related musculoskeletal discomfort.
Osteopaths may also be able to help support the body through acute injuries for a speedy and effective recovery and also work out a plan for chronic pain. Chronic pain can often involve fair amounts of problem solving, and we will spend the time to thoroughly investigate a variety of things that may be contributing to this issue. We can develop treatment plans and long term strategies to lessen and/or manage chronic pain.
Treatment can involve a variety of hands on massage, stretching, joint mobilisation, active resistance and release techniques, taping, dry needling, along with advice on changing habits, enhancing body awareness, education on pain, exercise and prevention.
This advice is usually the most important part. Of course the hands on work feels great and goes a long way to help an acute injury. But often, recurring or niggling pains and injuries require action from the body in trouble. Strengthening or retraining over time, looking at positions you might be spending a lot of time in, technique and effectiveness of repetitive movements (particularly important for the musicians out there), it will all depend on the particulars of that person and their body.
